When a Label Determined a Life

The traveling exhibition Education Through Work. 'Asocials' as Enemies of the State in the GDR brings to light a long-suppressed chapter of GDR history at the Cottbus Human Rights Center. The focus is on individuals who were stigmatized, marginalized, disciplined, and criminalized as so-called "asocial" under Paragraph 249 of the GDR Penal Code.

Fourteen Biographies Against Forgetting

Through fourteen selected life stories, the exhibition leads into individual fates between state control, societal normalization, and imprisonment. Among those affected were individuals without regular employment, people with unconventional lifestyles, prostitutes, punks, applicants for emigration, and those with politically undesirable views.

Photographs, historical documents, film footage, as well as interviews with witnesses and experts give the individuals affected their story back. The exhibition combines historical research with an intense examination of the works and makes visible how a state judgment about social belonging deeply interfered with biographies.

Paragraph 249 and the Logic of Exclusion

The so-called asocial paragraph 249 was broadly and indistinctly formulated. The SED dictatorship used it to pursue alleged work-shyness, deviant lifestyles, or unwanted political attitudes criminally. Those who did not conform to the ideal image of the socialist person could be declared an enemy of the state.

The presentation shows paths to homes, youth labor camps, and prisons, illuminates conditions of detention, and traces the consequences of stigmatization into life after release. Historical lines also lead back to the Empire, National Socialism, the early GDR, as well as to comparable concepts in the ČSSR and the Soviet Union.

Exhibition Atmosphere at a Place of Remembrance

In the historical context of the Cottbus Human Rights Center and the Zuchthaus Cottbus Memorial, the exhibition receives a special spatial effect. The proximity to the preserved traces of the detention site enhances the aesthetic experience and directs attention to the connection between personal memory, political repression, and human rights.

The restrained presentation of images, documents, and filmic testimonials does not create a distanced museum situation. It demands a focused examination of the works and opens spaces for cultural education, historical judgment, and engagement with contemporary forms of exclusion.

A Contribution to Democratic Remembrance Culture

The traveling exhibition was realized by exhibeo e. V. in cooperation with the Union of Victim Associations of Communist Tyranny and with the support of the Commissioner for the Victims of the SED Dictatorship at the German Bundestag. The curation combines scientific categorization with biographical communication and gives public attention to a lesser-known area of GDR reconciliation.

The artistic experience of this exhibition lies not in decorative staging, but in encountering documentary materials, individual life paths, and the moral demand of historical truth. Visitors can expect a factually grounded, emotionally intense exhibition about GDR injustice, human dignity, and the long-term effects of state stigmatization.

Conclusion: History Encounters Us Personally

"Education Through Work" makes visible how quickly societal labels can lead to state persecution. The exhibition offers an intense artistic experience between documentation, remembrance culture, and political education. A visit to the Cottbus Human Rights Center enriches both the aesthetic experience and historical understanding and sets a sign against forgetting.
