When a Label Decided a Life: Injustice in the GDR in Cottbus

The traveling exhibition Education Through Work. 'Asocials' as Enemies of the State in the GDR makes a long-suppressed chapter of GDR history visible. At the Cottbus Human Rights Center, visitors encounter individual life paths, historical documents, and film testimonials about exclusion, discipline, and criminalization.

Fourteen Biographies Against Forgetting

The focus is on fourteen portraits of women and men who could be persecuted under the so-called Asocial Paragraph 249 of the GDR Penal Code. So-called unwillingness to work, an unconventional lifestyle, prostitution, a political stance, or an application for emigration were enough to stigmatize people by the state. From a derogatory label, it became an instrument of social control.

Documents, Photographs, and Moving Contemporary History

The curation combines photographs, historical documents, film recordings, as well as testimonials and expert interviews. Documents become traces of personal fates, images turn into testimonies of institutional power, and the voices of those affected form an important counter-archive. The exhibition focuses on the mechanisms behind state repression and the long-term consequences for the lives of the persecuted.

Paragraph 249 as a Tool of State Repression

The exhibition places the so-called Asocial Paragraph in larger historical contexts. It discusses predecessors in the German Empire, in National Socialism, and in early GDR, as well as ideological points of reference in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Thus, the presentation opens up an art-historically and memorial-culturally relevant form of historical image and source analysis.

An Authentic Place of Remembrance

The Cottbus Prison Memorial enhances the exhibition atmosphere. The historical site gives the photographs, documents, and film interviews an immediate spatial effect. Cultural education transforms into an intense artistic experience of remembrance: The aesthetic experience arises from encounters with concrete biographies, material testimonies, and traces of state violence.

Conclusion: Understanding History Personally

The exhibition welcomes its audience with a factually precise and emotionally compelling engagement with GDR injustice, human dignity, and state exclusion. Those who wish to learn about memory culture, political education, and German contemporary history not only from books will experience an important examination of historical testimonies in Cottbus. A visit enriches the cultural experience and sets a sign against forgetting.
