When a Label Determined a Life: GDR Injustice in Cottbus
The traveling exhibition "Education Through Work. 'Asocials' as Enemies of the State in the GDR" brings to light a long-suppressed chapter of GDR history. At the Human Rights Center Cottbus, in a historically charged place of remembrance, visitors encounter photographs, documents, as well as film testimonies and expert interviews about exclusion, discipline, and criminalization.
Fourteen Life Paths Between Stigmatization and Imprisonment
At the center are fourteen portraits of individuals who could be persecuted under Paragraph 249 of the GDR Penal Code as so-called "asocials". The exhibition shows how perceived work-shyness, a non-conforming lifestyle, prostitution, a political stance, or an application for emigration led to official stigmatization. Social depreciation turned into state repression, and from an accusation could arise conviction and imprisonment.
Documents, Photographs, and Moving Memories
The curation connects historical documents and photographs with film testimonies and expert interviews, as well as historical film material. This creates a compelling view of the work that does not remain at abstract figures but makes individual life paths and the consequences of state attributions tangible. The atmosphere of the exhibition is characterized by the culture of remembrance and political education.
Historical Context of the "Asocial Paragraph"
The exhibition traces the development of persecution up to its precedents in the Empire, in National Socialism, and in the early GDR. International reference points in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union are also included. Themes such as propaganda and media, pathways to imprisonment, conditions in custody, and life after release open a differentiated perspective on social control and ideological normalization.
An Authentic Place for Cultural Education
The presentation in the Memorial Site of the Cottbus Prison enhances the aesthetic and historical experience. Spaces, materials, and the presence of the authentic place of imprisonment combine with the exhibition to create a concentrated artistic experience of documentary remembrance. The traveling exhibition was realized by exhibeo e. V. in cooperation with the Union of Victim Associations of Communist Violence and with the support of the Federal Commissioner for the Victims of the SED Dictatorship of the German Bundestag.
Conclusion: Remembrance Needs Direct Gaze
"Education Through Work" invites visitors with a factually precise, emotionally compelling exhibition about GDR injustice, human dignity, and the consequences of state exclusion. The combination of historical sources, individual biographies, and an authentic place of remembrance makes the visit a sustainable cultural experience. Anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of German contemporary history, memorial culture, and political education should definitely experience this exhibition live in Cottbus.
