When Love Tips: The Most Beautiful Version on the Chamber Stage
On November 1, 2026, the State Theater Cottbus will present Ruth-Maria Thomas' highly acclaimed novel The Most Beautiful Version as an intense theatrical adaptation on the Chamber Stage. The central characters are Jella and Yannick, a young couple whose seemingly special love increasingly becomes overshadowed by control, harm, and violence.
A Relationship in the Currents of Escalation
Jella looks back: at her first great love, at the desire for a shared, beautiful life, and at the moments when closeness turns into threat. The stage adaptation tells the story of a young woman who must break free from the images others create of her. From the private drama emerges a ruthless examination of patriarchal structures and female socialization.
Poetic Language Meets Harsh Reality
Ruth-Maria Thomas combines stylistic lightness with graphic imagery in her debut novel. Lusatia, small towns, gravel pits, gangsta rap, glitter lip gloss, and friendship form the atmospheric resonance space of a generation. Sarah Kohm's directing translates this linguistic power and tenderness into a concentrated theatrical form where introspection and accusation closely intertwine.
Precise Direction and Strong Acting Talent
Sarah Kohm is responsible for direction and stage adaptation. Nathalie Schörken embodies Jella with a youthful naivety that transforms throughout the evening into defiance and realization. Amos Detscher plays Yannick. The stage and costumes are designed by Lena Marie Emrich, with dramaturgy handled by Lena Fritschle. The Chamber Stage creates an immediate playing space in which looks, bodies, and speech rhythms develop their own tension.
A Play That Resonates
The press acclaimed the premiere as brave, authentic, and honest. Theater der Zeit highlighted how the production translates the linguistic power and tenderness of the novel onto the stage; at the same time, the stage adaptation allows room for subtle humor. The source material was also awarded the Ulla Hahn Literature Prize 2025 and was nominated for the German Book Prize as well as the Aspekte Literature Prize.
Important Note on Content
The production deals with physical, psychological, and sexual violence. The performance lasts approximately two hours and is presented without an intermission. The Chamber Stage is accessible for wheelchairs; prior registration with the visitor service is recommended.
Conclusion
The Most Beautiful Version promises an intense stage experience between poetic language, precise dramaturgy, and shocking reality. Those who want to experience contemporary acting, social relevance, and strong acting talent firsthand will find an evening at the theater in Cottbus that does not end with the last scene. Tickets for the performance on November 1, 2026, are available for presale.
