Robin Hood up close: An exclusive look behind the scenes
When the rehearsal stage in the Great House of the Cottbus State Theater becomes Sherwood Forest, a special stage experience begins: During the open rehearsal of Robin Hood, visitors will experience for an hour how text, acting, music, and direction come together to create a new production.
Theater emerges between bow and arrow
The production by Angela Obst, with lyrics by Josef Parzefall, tells of the County of Nottingham, where King John raises taxes while his own treasury overflows. In the woods of Sherwood, a brave community forms around Robin Hood, Little John, Brother Tuck, Scarlet Will, and Maid Marian. Their goal: a fairer Nottingham.
The dramaturgy combines fairy-tale adventures with a contemporary view of power, social inequality, and solidarity. Humor, music, and rapid stage moments meet the familiar legend of the avenger of the dispossessed and protector of the weak.
Rehearsal work as an immediate stage experience
An open rehearsal makes visible what remains hidden from the audience during a regular performance. The directing team and ensemble demonstrate how scenes are created, how movement sequences are refined, and how language, rhythm, set design, and theater atmosphere come together into a coherent whole.
Afterwards, a audience discussion provides room for questions about the production, acting, and behind-the-scenes work. This proximity gives the evening its special energy: the audience experiences not just a story, but the creative process that brings it to the stage.
A Christmas fairy tale with a contemporary core
Robin Hood is aimed at audiences aged six and up as a Christmas fairy tale. The production by Paulina Neukampf premiered in 2025 at the Magdeburg Theater and is being adapted in collaboration with the Cottbus ensemble for the Cottbus State Theater. The director headed the children’s and youth theater department at the Paderborn Theater from 2020 to 2024 and has been working as a freelance director since 2024.
This is how theater history and present meet: The legendary character of Robin Hood remains recognizable as a hero of justice, but in the new stage version, he receives a lively, humorous and contemporary outline.
Conclusion: Theater is created before the audience's eyes
The open rehearsal of Robin Hood invites you to directly experience the magic of the performing arts. Amid first scenic arcs, musical impulses, and focused ensemble work, a view opens up onto a production that combines courage, wit, and community. Those who want to not only see theater but experience its creation will find an impressive evening with free admission in the Great House.
