Who invented it? Perhaps a pharmacist! – Discoveries from the pharmacy laboratory
The special exhibition at the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum Cottbus offers a surprising glimpse into the history of scientific and technological innovations. The focus is on the question of which developments originated in pharmacies and how closely pharmacy, chemistry, the history of technology, and everyday culture are interconnected.
Pharmacies as Workshops of Knowledge
For over three centuries, pharmacies were not only places of drug manufacturing but also laboratories for observation, experimentation, and practical research. The exhibition vividly illustrates this historical change and shows how the pharmacist's spirit of research extended far beyond the bounds of medicine.
From Beet Sugar to Chlorodont
The presentation collects examples from the history of science and technology, including the production of beet sugar, the development of soda water, the isolation of morphine, early gas lighting systems, UHU glue, and Chlorodont toothpaste. The exhibits connect technical innovation with everyday history and present familiar products in a new light.
Historical Rooms and Sensory Work Observation
The exhibition is embedded in the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum, located in the former Löwen Pharmacy at Cottbus's Altmarkt. Historical pharmacy rooms, work tools, and museum objects create a special exhibition atmosphere. Colors, materials, containers, and laboratory instruments convey an immediate artistic experience of the history of science and make the aesthetic experience of historical objects tangible.
Cultural Education through Tours and Mediation
A detailed tour of the special exhibition must be registered by phone with the museum. A regular walk will present the exhibition in a shorter form. The museum offers regular tours from Tuesday to Friday at 11:00 and 14:00, as well as on weekends and holidays at 14:00 and 15:00. An audio guide in English and Polish expands the mediation offer.
Visit to the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum
The museum is located at Altmarkt 24 in Cottbus. The historical rooms are not accessible to wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers; a barrier-free toilet is not available. Parking is available at Oberkirchplatz and in the parking garage Neustädter Platz 10. The tram line 1 runs from the train station to the Stadthalle stop, from where the museum is about a five-minute walk away.
The special exhibition connects pharmacy history, the history of science, and everyday culture to an educational aesthetic experience. Those wanting to discover how inventions with lasting effects emerged from curiosity, observation, and experimentation will experience an unusual and inspiring artistic experience at the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum. A visit is worthwhile because only the historical rooms, materials, and objects make the history of the pharmacy laboratory fully experienceable.
