When Pharmacies Become Laboratories of Progress
The special exhibition Who Invented It? Perhaps a Pharmacist! at the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum Cottbus opens up views of scientific and technical discoveries that originated from pharmaceutical research, keen observation, and experimental curiosity. Visitors experience the history of science as a lively narrative between historical pharmacy spaces, chemical processes, and everyday inventions.
Between Herbs, Chemistry, and Inventive Spirit
The exhibition takes visitors through three centuries of pharmaceutical and technical development. Examples on display include beet sugar, soda water, the isolation of morphine, early gas lighting systems, UHU glue, and Chlorodont toothpaste. The exhibits showcase how closely pharmacy, chemistry, the history of technology, and everyday culture are interconnected.
Historical Rooms as Part of the Art Experience
The Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum is located in the former Löwen Apotheke at Cottbus' Altmarkt. The historical working rooms convey the atmosphere of a pharmacy around 1850 and give the viewing experience a special spatial effect. Between the dispensary, materials, and historical objects, an aesthetic experience arises where cultural education merges with sensory perception.
History of Science Presented Visually
The curation connects specific inventions with the working methods of early pharmacists. Observation, formulation, laboratory work, and artisanal precision appear as essential foundations of modern scientific development. An audio guide in English and Polish complements the presentation. Guided tours of the museum and the special exhibition deepen the understanding of the history of pharmacy, medicinal plants, and historical pharmacy work.
Visitor Experience and Practical Information
The museum is accessible only through guided tours. Regular tours take place from Tuesday to Friday at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM as well as on weekends and holidays at 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. A detailed tour of the special exhibition must be arranged by phone. The historical exhibition rooms are not wheelchair accessible; wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers cannot be used there. Parking is available at Oberkirchplatz and in the parking garage Neustädter Platz 10. The tram line 1 runs from the train station to the Stadthalle stop, from which it is about a five-minute walk.
Conclusion: Pharmacy as the History of Invention
Who Invented It? Perhaps a Pharmacist! promises a concentrated artistic experience of a special kind: not an exhibition about painting or sculpture, but a fascinating showcase of objects, processes, and ideas that have shaped our world. Those who wish to experience the history of science, technology, everyday culture, and historical spaces with keen curiosity should visit this exhibition live. Only on site do the exhibits, the rooms, and the exhibition atmosphere unfold their full effect.
