When Pharmacies Become Workshops of Knowledge
The special exhibition Who Invented It? Perhaps a Pharmacist! at the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum Cottbus offers a surprising look at the history of scientific and technical innovations. Over three centuries, the exhibition shows how pharmaceutical observation, eagerness for experimentation, and artisanal precision produced developments that continue to shape science, technology, and everyday life.
Discoveries from the Pharmacy Lab
The focus is on examples such as the production of beet sugar, the development of soda water, the isolation of morphine, early gas lighting systems, as well as UHU adhesive and Chlorodont toothpaste. The curation connects pharmaceutical history, history of technology, and everyday culture into a vivid narrative about curiosity, research, and social progress.
Historical Spaces and Sensory Materials
The Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum is located in the former Löwen Apotheke at Cottbus Altmarkt. The pharmacy interior, herbal room, poison chamber, and galenic laboratory preserve the space effect of a 19th-century pharmacy. Wood, glass, metal, ceramics, herbs, and historical laboratory equipment create a dense exhibition atmosphere. The examination of the works makes science not abstract, but directly experienceable through objects, surfaces, formulations, and work processes.
Cultural Education Close to the Object
The exhibition is aimed at art and culture enthusiasts as well as families, school classes, and anyone interested in pharmacy, inventions, and historical everyday culture. A detailed guided tour of the special exhibition must be registered by phone with the museum. During the regular museum tour, the exhibition will be presented in a shorter form. An audio guide in English and Polish complements the educational offering.
Practical Information for the Visit
Regular tours take place from Tuesday to Friday at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, and on weekends and holidays at 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Individual agreements are possible for groups and special dates. Due to the historical building structure, access to the exhibition rooms is not barrier-free; wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers cannot be used there. Parking is available at Oberkirchplatz and in the parking garage Neustädter Platz 10. The tram line 1 from the train station leads to the Stadthalle stop, from where the museum is reachable within a few minutes on foot.
Conclusion: The Spirit of Research Among Herbs and Laboratory Equipment
Visitors can expect an educational, atmospheric art experience between the history of science, historical spaces, and cultural education. Those who want to discover the connection between pharmacy, technology, and everyday culture will have an unusual aesthetic experience here. The exhibition is particularly worth visiting in person, as materials, spaces, and objects only reveal their full effect on site.
