Oscar Murillo. Social Mapping at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus: Art becomes a shared experience
With Oscar Murillo. Social Mapping, the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus invites you to a participatory art experience that rethinks painting, drawing, and collective artwork observation. From May 12 to May 30, 2026, a large canvas will be created here, on which visitors can leave traces together.
A project between studio, museum, and social cartography
The initiative relies on an open process: Murillo sees drawing as a social act, a visible thinking in space. Thus, the exhibition situation transforms into a vibrant form of aesthetic experience, where individual gestures, spontaneous lines, and colorful markings converge into a multifaceted visual cartography. This openness particularly characterizes Murillo's international art practice, which is rooted in painting, installation, and collective processes.
Oscar Murillo: An internationally relevant representative of contemporary art
The Colombian-British artist is among the defining voices of contemporary art. His work revolves around migration, labor, memory, community, and social translation. Murillo gained recognition through large-scale canvases, material-focused painting, and participatory projects that challenge the canon of exhibition practice. In 2019, he received the Turner Prize jointly with three other artists. Museums and galleries such as Tate Modern, Haus der Kunst, WIELS, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Museum Ludwig have showcased his work in key presentations.
The BLMK as a place for cultural education and participation
The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of modern and contemporary art from the former GDR and subsequent traditions. At the Cottbus location in the former Diesel Power Plant, this collection history meets a clear architectural framework and an exhibition atmosphere that fosters both concentration and exchange. The venue offers ideal conditions for art education formats, tours, and collaborative work.
Why a visit is worthwhile
Social Mapping connects artistic authority with direct participation. Visitors experience not a distant observation but become part of an open image process that makes voices, traces, and perspectives visible. The result is more than a workshop: it is a vibrant art experience at the intersection of contemporary art, social space, and museum educational practice.
Conclusion: This exhibition invites you to not only see art but to co-create it. Those who appreciate contemporary painting, participatory formats, and a dense exhibition atmosphere should experience Oscar Murillo. Social Mapping at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus live.
