Fons Hickmann: Poster Art Between Sign, Experiment, and Social Impact

At the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus, the Brandenburg Museum of Modern Art dedicates a comprehensive solo exhibition to the graphic designer, typographer, and professor Fons Hickmann. Fons Hickmann. Posters of Today and Before assembles works from three decades and makes visible how precise design connects public communication, cultural identity, and aesthetic experience.

Three Decades of Visual Research

Born in Hamm in 1966, Fons Hickmann founded the design studio Fons Hickmann m23 in Berlin in 2001. His work spans communication design, typography, photography, book design, and poster art. The exhibition focuses on his internationally awarded poster creations and showcases a designer who sees every project as an experiment.

The presented posters were often created in series for cultural clients. They are complemented by self- and media-reflective works as well as self-commissions in which socio-political themes appear as paper interventions. The poster is thus experienced not only as a carrier of information but as an independent visual form.

Typography as Visual Dramaturgy

In viewing the works, typeface, color, image area, and composition enter into a tension-filled dialogue. Typographic settings condense content, direct the gaze, and create rhythmic spatial effects. Some works appear immediately as a striking sign, while others reveal themselves only through prolonged viewing and a careful analysis of their visual layers.

The exhibition atmosphere arises from the interplay of clarity and irritation. Color contrasts, serial arrangements, and media references demonstrate how graphic design organizes perception. The artistic experience directs attention to an art form that remains omnipresent in everyday life yet is often underestimated.

The Poster as a Space of Social Resonance

Hickmann's works combine aesthetic precision with cultural and social responsibility. His self-commissions address issues of public life and demonstrate how design can take a stand. Consequently, the exhibition opens a gateway to the history and present of visual communication, cultural education, and the question of how images shape public space.

The Brandenburg Museum of Modern Art has long had works by Fons Hickmann in its collection. An extensive donation from the designer has expanded this collection into a significant archive. The curation thus allows for a concentrated insight into the development lines, working methods, and thought models of his poster creations.

A Highly Awarded Designer

Fons Hickmann and his studio are among the internationally highly awarded actors in contemporary graphic design. Among the mentioned awards are the Golden Bee Award, the iF Award in Gold, ADC Awards, LeadAwards, Joseph Binder Awards, and the Master's Eye Award of the Triennale Trnava. Hickmann teaches as a professor of communication design at the University of the Arts Berlin and is a member of renowned professional organizations.

Conclusion: Experience Poster Art Live

Fons Hickmann. Posters of Today and Before invites visitors for a concentrated encounter with typography, painting in the extended sense, visual culture, and experimental communication design. The exhibition combines art-historical classification with immediate aesthetic experience and shows how socially impactful art emerges from paper, type, color, and visual ideas. A visit to the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus enriches the viewing of the works and opens new perspectives on the visual present.
