Fons Hickmann: Poster art as a visual thought image
The Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art – Diesel Power Plant Cottbus dedicates a focused solo exhibition to Fons Hickmann. Posters from today and before showcases three decades of independent communication design and makes visible how a concise visual vocabulary emerges from typography, image, material, and societal attitude.
Three decades between commission and experiment
Fons Hickmann, born in Hamm in 1966, is one of the influential German graphic designers, typographers, and professors of today. His studio Fons Hickmann m23, founded in Berlin in 2001, works on complex communication systems, book, poster, magazine, and corporate design projects as well as on digital media. The exhibition focuses on his internationally acclaimed poster creations.
The poster as a cultural intervention
The works on display were often created in series for cultural clients. Alongside this, there are self- and media-reflective designs as well as self-commissioned posters that address socio-political issues as paper interventions. Hickmann's design combines typographic precision with visual energy and invites one to view the poster not only as an information carrier but as an independent form of contemporary art.
Typography, rhythm, and visual tension
In the examination of the works, contrasting typographic images, serial orders, surprising image combinations, and a conscious tension between legibility and irritation emerge. The exhibition atmosphere opens up an aesthetic experience in which communication design, painting, photography, and conceptual installation mentally engage with each other. Paper becomes a projection surface for cultural memory, political questions, and experimental visual language.
Art historical classification and cultural education
Hickmann studied photography and communication design in Düsseldorf as well as aesthetics and media theory in Wuppertal. Since 2007, he has been teaching at the University of the Arts Berlin. His studio has received more than 200 internationally relevant awards, including the Golden Bee Award, the LeadAward in Gold, the iF Award in Gold, ADC awards, and the Joseph Binder Award. In 2012, Hickmann was honored with the Master’s Eye Award of the Triennale Trnava for his overall work.
The exhibition thus not only provides an overview of outstanding poster design but also access to cultural education: Visitors experience how visual communication condenses societal issues, directs attention, and shapes public spaces.
Conclusion: Experience poster art live
Those interested in graphic design, typography, modern art, and visual culture will discover a multifaceted art experience between applied graphics and autonomous art at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus. The viewing of the works on site makes the rhythm of the series, the materiality of the paper, and the impact of the compositions immediately tangible. A visit enriches the aesthetic experience and sharpens the perception of the images that accompany our everyday lives.
