Unbridled Self-Movements: Photography as an Artistic Breakthrough in the GDR

The Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus is dedicating the exhibition Unbridled Self-Movements. Art with Photography in the GDR to an experimental image culture of the 1980s. The exhibition makes visible how artists understood photography not as a neutral documentation, but as material for self-design, boundary crossing, and artistic liberation.

Another Photography of the GDR

In an era shaped by political and social limitations, the image became a space of possibility. In the context of subcultural networks, movements of another photography and a bottom-up photography developed. Privately produced photo portfolios and semi-legal magazines served as platforms for an artistic practice that evaded the official documentation ideal.

When Photography Becomes Action

The exhibition showcases positions in which photographic images are connected with performance, installation, intervention, and serial orders. Body, space, material, and action enter into a tense dialogue. Often, a consciously anti-aesthetic visual language emerges that does not depict external reality but reflects its own conditions.

Artistic Positions between Image, Body, and Space

Included are works by Claus Bach, Tina Bara, Micha Brendel, Kurt Buchwald, Klaus Elle, Irene Fischer, Thomas Florschuetz, Else Gabriel, Rainer Görß, Klaus Hähner-Springmühl, Wolf Kahlen, Matthias Leupold, Olaf Martens, Cornelia Schleime, Erasmus Schröter, and Gabriele Stötzer, among others. The diversity of positions opens a multifaceted panorama of East German photographic art and its transitions to painting, sculpture, installation, and performance.

The Diesel Power Plant as a Resonance Space

The historical industrial architecture of the Diesel Power Plant shapes the exhibition atmosphere. Clear spatial alignments, visible materiality, and changing light effects create an intense framework for the viewing of works. The aesthetic experience emerges from the interplay between photographic surface, physical presence, and spatial movement.

Curating and Art Historical Classification

The exhibition concept is developed by the external curator Christoph Tannert. Collections from the photographic collection of BLMK as well as loans are presented. The collection is considered the only museum collection for photography founded in the GDR and thus forms a special art historical resonance space for the exhibition. Cultural education is connected here with a concentrated engagement on freedom, self-assertion, and the boundaries of the medium.

Conclusion: An Art Experience Between Memory and Freedom

Unbridled Self-Movements opens an intense examination of photography as an idea, action, and social self-empowerment. Art enthusiasts will experience a precisely curated exhibition that makes a previously less noticed chapter of GDR art history visible. A visit to the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus enriches cultural education and creates space for a sustainable aesthetic experience.
