Photography as a Space of Freedom: Unbridled Self-Movements at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus
The exhibition Unbridled Self-Movements. Art with Photography in the GDR is dedicated to an independent, experimental image practice of the 1980s. At the Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst – Diesel Power Plant Cottbus, visitors encounter an art that did not see photography as neutral documentation, but as material for self-assertion, self-expansion, and artistic transgression.
A Different Photography of the GDR
In the socially and politically tightly regulated GDR, an alternative photography developed beyond state-influenced image conventions. Artists liberated the medium from its journalistic-documentary context and combined it with action, performance, installation, body art, and conceptual methods. Staging, montage, alienation, and serial image sequences open up new image realities.
Body, Action, and Artistic Self-Assertion
The roughly thirty artistic positions show photography as a performative action space. Body, space, and movement enter into a tense dialogue. Among others, works by Claus Bach, Tina Bara, Micha Brendel, Kurt Buchwald, Klaus Elle, Irene Fischer, Thomas Florschuetz, Else Gabriel, Matthias Leupold, Cornelia Schleime, Erasmus Schröter, and Gabriele Stötzer can be seen.
Privately produced photo portfolios and semi-legal magazines formed important spaces for publication and exchange. The exhibition makes visible an art practice that evaded established categories and developed a distinctive aesthetic energy from the experience of social constriction.
Curation and Art Historical Context
The exhibition concept comes from Christoph Tannert, art historian, exhibition maker, and author. His curatorial perspective brings a previously fragmentary chapter of East German art history to the center. The exhibition locates the works in the tension field of experimental photography, conceptual art, performance, and subcultural image practice.
The Diesel Power Plant as a Resonance Space
The industrial architecture of the Diesel Power Plant enhances the exhibition atmosphere. Light, materiality, image sequence, and spatial effect enter into a concentrated dialogue. In the contemplation of the works, an aesthetic experience is created that combines historical research with sensory perception and raises questions about freedom, identity, memory, and artistic autonomy.
Conclusion: An Intense Art Experience in Cottbus
Unbridled Self-Movements offers an enlightening art experience for all those interested in GDR art, photography, performance, and cultural education. The exhibition shows how a seemingly limited medium can create a space of freedom. A visit to the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus opens new perspectives on East German modernity and invites an immediate aesthetic experience.
