Photography as a Space of Freedom: Unbridled Self-Movements in Cottbus
The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art at the Diesel Power Plant in Cottbus is dedicating the exhibition Unbridled Self-Movements. Art with Photography in the GDR to an independent, experimental visual language of the 1980s. At the center is an art that does not understand photography as neutral documentation, but as material for self-design, boundary transgression, and artistic liberation.
A Different Photography of the GDR
In the narrow societal order of the GDR, change became a matter of self-expansion. Artists from various disciplines developed positions that consciously distanced themselves from journalistic-documentary visual conventions. The exhibition presents a photography that reflects its own conditions and does not simply depict reality, but examines, distorts, and reimagines it.
Image, Body, and Space
The works on display connect photography with performance, action, installation, and intervention. Series of images, private photo portfolios, and semi-legal magazines testify to a subcultural artistic practice, where aesthetic experience and societal self-assertion directly intersect. Forms, excerpts, repetitions, and deliberate breaks direct the gaze to the question of how images are created and what reality they produce.
Artistic Positions Between Concept and Experiment
Works by Claus Bach, Tina Bara, Micha Brendel, Kurt Buchwald, Klaus Elle, Irene Fischer, Thomas Florschuetz, Else Gabriel, Wolf Kahlen, Matthias Leupold, Olaf Martens, Cornelia Schleime, Erasmus Schröter, and Gabriele Stötzer can be seen. Their works range from conceptual photography to serial ordering systems and performative and anti-aesthetic procedures. The curation by external curator Christoph Tannert makes visible the diversity of the art direction of art with photography in the GDR.
The Diesel Power Plant as an Exhibition Space
The industrial architecture of the Diesel Power Plant sharpens the perception of the exhibition. Between clear spatial axes, striking materials, and changing light moods, the photographic works unfold a concentrated exhibition atmosphere. The viewing of the works becomes a movement between image surface, body, and space.
Cultural Education and Aesthetic Experience
The exhibition opens a differentiated access to East German art history and invites reflection on image politics, subjectivity, memory, and artistic freedom. The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art possesses a significant collection of art from the GDR and its subsequent artistic traditions. This creates a solid framework for an art experience that connects historical research with sensual perception.
A visit to Unbridled Self-Movements promises an intense aesthetic experience and a new perspective on the photography of the late GDR. Anyone wishing to experience art as a space for thought, visual experiment, and expression of individual freedom should definitely discover this exhibition at the Diesel Power Plant in Cottbus live.
