Photography as a Space of Freedom: Unbraked Self-Movements at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus

The exhibition Unbraked Self-Movements. Art with Photography in the GDR is dedicated to an experimental image culture of the 1980s. At the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art, photography is not understood as neutral documentation, but as material for self-assertion, self-expansion, and artistic boundary crossing.

A Different Photography of the GDR

In the tightly regulated society of the GDR, artists developed distinctive forms of alternative photography and bottom-up photography. The presented positions break away from the journalistic-documentary understanding of images and make the medium itself the subject of the work consideration. Staging, estrangement, montage, and serial orders open up new image realities.

Body, Action, and Image Space

The exhibition connects photography with performance, installation, intervention, body art, and conceptual methods. Body, space, and action enter into a tense dialogue. Photographic image surfaces become performative action spaces, where personal freedom, social constraints, and the desire for artistic autonomy come face to face.

Around Thirty Artistic Positions

Among others, works by Claus Bach, Tina Bara, Micha Brendel, Kurt Buchwald, Thomas Florschuetz, Else Gabriel, Cornelia Schleime, Erasmus Schröter, and Gabriele Stötzer are on display. The diverse works showcase an art direction that is defined by idea, process, and attitude. Their forms range from actions and performances to interventions, serial image sequences, and deliberately anti-aesthetic design processes.

Art Historical Classification and Curating

The exhibition concept was developed by Christoph Tannert as an external curator. The presentation combines holdings of the photographic collection of the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art with loans. The collection is regarded as the only museum collection for photography established in the GDR and preserves significant experimental positions alongside author photography.

The Diesel Power Plant as a Resonance Space

The industrial architecture of the former diesel power plant enhances the exhibition atmosphere. Visible materials, clear spatial axes, and concentrated museum lighting create an intense environment for the aesthetic experience. In the work consideration, photographic series, cross-media installations, and performative image strategies meet between historical memory and current relevance.

Conclusion: An Intense Art Experience in Cottbus

Visitors can expect a professionally grounded and sensually penetrating exhibition about photography, memory, resistance, and artistic self-determination. Those interested in GDR art, experimental photography, performance, installation, and cultural education will experience an extraordinary work consideration at the Diesel Power Plant. The exhibition deserves a visit on-site because it makes photography an open space of freedom and a lively aesthetic experience anew.
