The female history of Branitz becomes visible
The special exhibition The Lady/s of the House. A Search for Traces at the Prince Pückler Museum Park & Castle Branitz is dedicated to Princess Lucie of Pückler-Muskau and other women who have shaped the castle and its cultural history. On October 8, 2026, an art and cultural historical perspective on education, taste, networks, and female creative power in the 19th century will be opened.
Lucie of Pückler-Muskau between intellect and design
At the center is Lucie of Pückler-Muskau, born Countess von Hardenberg-Reventlow, who was appreciated by her contemporaries for her intelligence, her feelings, and her education. The exhibition follows her biography from the eager young woman to the sovereign designer of Branitz. Her encounter with Hermann von Pückler in Berlin in 1815/16 serves as an important historical reference point.
Letters, furniture, and Asian art as historical testimonies
The curation connects personal documents with material culture. Furniture, Asian art, paintings, and numerous letters provide insights into lifestyle, collecting passion, and social relationships. Each object contributes to the examination of a period in which the castle rooms were both private living space, representation site, and cultural memory.
Women in the cultural memory of the castle
The search for traces does not stop with Lucie of Pückler. Other women who lived in the castle after her death come into focus. This includes Louise Isabelle de Constant-Rebecque. The exhibition thus expands the perspective on the history of the Pückler house and makes female presence an independent component of castle culture experienceable.
Aesthetic experience in the historical space
The artistic experience arises from the interplay of architecture, original objects, and narrated biography. In the exhibition atmosphere, historical surfaces, fine materials, personal manuscripts, and the spatial effect of the castle meet. The exhibition connects art history, everyday history, and cultural education into a sensual examination of works.
Conclusion: An exhibition about influence and memory
Visitors can expect a well-informed, atmospheric search for traces of women whose actions continue to shape Branitz to this day. The exhibition invites a re-examination of Lucie von Pückler and the history of the castle. Those interested in art, cultural history, garden art, and female action spaces will have a enriching aesthetic experience on site.
