Strangeness and Freedom: Pückler's Orient in Dialogue with the Present
The Prince Pückler Museum Park & Castle Branitz invites you on October 23, 2026, to a special viewing between historical landscape art and contemporary imagery. The special exhibition 'Strangeness and Freedom: Connecting Worlds. Pückler's Orient in His Landscapes' combines the travel imaginations of Hermann Prince of Pückler-Muskaus with an artistic intervention by Mona Höke and Kathrin Karras.
Painting and Photography as a Shared Image Space
At the center are large-format works by painter Mona Höke and photographer Kathrin Karras. Their collaboration is based on the layering of surfaces: both artists directly engaged with each other’s works, reworked, interwove, and combined different visual languages into a new whole. Thus, painting and photography meet not only in the same space but within a shared artistic form.
Pückler's Orient as a Poetic Landscape Vision
In Pückler's historical breakfast room, fantasies and visions about the landscapes of his journey through the Orient were created. The exhibition views this journey not merely as a historical episode but as a starting point for an aesthetic experience of strangeness, freedom, memory, and cultural connection. Pückler's landscapes appear as conceptual and visual spaces where distant impressions connect with the garden art in Branitz.
Historical Place and Contemporary Art
The atmosphere of the exhibition in Castle Branitz thrives on the interplay between spatial effects, historical interiors, and modern art. Layering, photographic details, and painterly condensing open up a viewing experience that sharpens the eye for material, surface, color, and composition. At the same time, the curation makes visible how contemporary art can reinterpret a historical place.
Cultural Education through Aesthetic Experience
The exhibition provides art enthusiasts access to Pückler's world of travel, landscape design, and imagination. It connects art historical contexts with immediate sensory perception and creates a resonant space for cultural education. Particularly appealing is the dialogue between the historical figure of the landscape artist and today’s methods of photography, painting, and reworking.
The art experience at the Prince Pückler Museum Park & Castle Branitz takes you from the fantasy of the Orient to the Brandenburg landscape and from historical interior design to the present. Anyone who wants to experience the connection between painting and photography, Pückler's travel pictures, and the poetic spatial effect of the breakfast room should definitely visit this exhibition in person.
