Between Capri and Rome: A Historical Art Image of Italy at Branitz Castle
The special exhibition Between Capri and Rome. Hugo Paul Harrer at the Prince Pückler Museum Park & Castle Branitz invites you into the atmospheric world of Italian painting journeys of the 19th century. At its center is the painter Hugo Paul Harrer, whose life and work were closely connected with Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and the artistic perspective of the southern Italian landscape.
An Artist Biography Between Rome and the Amalfi Coast
Hugo Paul Harrer lived with his wife Franziska Wickerath in Rome. The couple undertook painting trips to the Amalfi Coast, where the light, coastal shapes and Mediterranean coloring shaped the artistic perception of that time. After Harrer's early death, Franziska Wickerath actively continued his artistic legacy: she sent his paintings to exhibitions and thus preserved a significant body of work.
Drawings, Portrait, and a Restored Vesuvius
The cabinet exhibition presents works from the collection that now belongs to the Carl Blechen Collection of the city of Cottbus comprehensively for the first time. Numerous drawings, a portrait of Franziska, and a freshly restored Vesuvius will be on display. The contemplation of the works provides insights into the painting and drawing art of the 19th century and illustrates how artists translated travel impressions, nature observations, and cultural memories into images.
Italy as an Aesthetic Experience
In the atmosphere of the exhibition, historical landscape ideas, personal biography, and art historical collection history converge. The motifs revive Italy for the Harrers: Rome appears as a cultural resonance space, the Amalfi Coast as a place of sensual experience, and Vesuvius as a dramatic natural phenomenon. Light, volcanic landscape, architecture, and human presence combine to create an impressive panorama.
Franziska Wickerath and the Formation of an Art Collection
Franziska Wickerath married Hugo Paul Harrer in 1868 and later lived with the lawyer Paul Werner in Cottbus, where she became known as the first female mayor. She bequeathed many works of her first husband to him. The exhibition thus not only focuses on a painter but also on the role of collectors, estate care, and cultural mediation. At the same time, a connection is formed to the history of the urban art collection, which was founded in 1913.
