Participate, think along, draw along: Oscar Murillo. Social Mapping at BLMK Cottbus

In May 2026, an artistic experience will emerge at the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus, dissolving the boundaries between observation and participation. Social Mapping invites visitors to leave their own traces on a large canvas and collaboratively shape a vibrant image of collective experience.

A participatory project with international impact

Oscar Murillo is one of the influential voices in contemporary art. His practice combines painting, drawing, installation, and performative formats into open visual spaces where social relations, migration, community, and cultural belonging become visible. The project in Cottbus is part of a nationwide network of Social Mapping actions and is related to Murillo's current exhibition Collective Osmosis in Potsdam.

The canvas as a social resonance space

Upon entering the Diesel Power Plant, visitors encounter not a silent showcase but an active image surface. Pens, colors, and markings transform the canvas into an archive of spontaneous gestures. The exhibition experience thrives on movement, proximity, and the moment of collective action. From the sum of individual contributions, a visual cartography of thoughts, signs, and perspectives emerges.

BLMK Cottbus: A place for modern art and cultural education

BLMK boasts one of the most comprehensive museum collections of art from the GDR and subsequent traditions. The Diesel Power Plant in Cottbus connects industrial architecture with contemporary exhibition practices. The barrier-free accessible spaces create ideal conditions for an inclusive art experience that links museum education and aesthetic experience.

Why a visit is worthwhile

Social Mapping demonstrates how open art can be when understood as a social process. The exhibition combines international contemporary art with direct participation from the audience, turning the museum visit into an active event. Anyone who wants to not only observe art but co-create it should definitely experience this presentation live in Cottbus.
