Fons Hickmann: Poster Art Between Present and Memory
The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art presents Fons Hickmann. Posters of Today and Before, a concentrated solo exhibition showcasing the internationally acclaimed work of the German graphic designer, typographer, and professor. The exhibition opens a glimpse into more than three decades of visual communication and presents the poster as an independent art form, cultural memory, and social thinking space.
The Poster as a Visual Experiment
Fons Hickmann, born in Hamm in 1966, founded the design studio Fons Hickmann m23 in Berlin in 2001. His work merges communication design, typography, book design, magazine and poster design with digital media. At the center is a design that does not linger on the decorative surface: text, image, color, and composition engage in tense relationships, condensing complex content into concise visual signs.
Typography, Image, and Social Reflection
The exhibition makes visible how Hickmann understands the medium of the poster as a cultural intervention. Typographic structures meet photographic elements, graphic contrasts, and experimental image worlds. Thus, a work consideration is created where every surface carries meaning and every visual decision directs the gaze. The poster simultaneously appears as an information carrier, an urban orientation tool, and an aesthetic object.
An Exhibition with Art Historical Perspective
Hickmann's works are rooted in the tradition of modern graphic design and bring its achievements into a media-overarching present. His design combines constructive clarity with an open, often surprising visual logic. The atmosphere of the exhibition invites contemplation on the development of contemporary posters, the impact of typographic images, and the political and social dimensions of visual communication.
Expertise, Teaching, and International Recognition
As a professor of graphic and communication design at the University of the Arts Berlin, Fons Hickmann also shapes cultural education and the training of young designers. His studio has received numerous international awards, including Golden Bee Awards, an iF Award in Gold, LeadAwards, ADC awards, and Joseph Binder Awards. In 2012, the Triennale Trnava honored his complete works with the Master's Eye Award.
Art Experience at the Diesel Power Station Cottbus
The examination of works at the Diesel Power Station provides immediate access to questions of visual culture: How is attention created? How does information transform into image? And what societal issues can be made visible through design? Between color, form, rhythm, and materiality, an aesthetic experience develops that is equally sensory and analytical.
The exhibition can be seen from October 3rd to December 6th, 2026. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The regular admission fee is 4 Euros, and the reduced admission fee is 3 Euros.
Conclusion: Experience Poster Art Live
Fons Hickmann's posters showcase how powerful graphic design can be as art, a form of communication, and a social commentary. Visitors can expect an inspiring art experience between typography, visual research, and cultural reflection. Those who want to rediscover the language of the poster and experience design as an aesthetic experience should not miss this exhibition at the Diesel Power Station Cottbus.
