Water becomes Sound: Afloat / Sound of Waves at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus
The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art dedicates the exhibition Afloat / Sound of Waves to a fluid field of research between contemporary art, sound art, and artistic media practice. The project by Radio Industry / Transmitter examines water not only as a motif but as a movable structure, resonance space, and bearer of sounds, data, and memories.
An exhibition between image, sound, and movement
The pop-up exhibition will present the results of the AFLOAT sessions from the Gramzow storage facility in August 2026, as well as standalone works in the context of local currents. Visual media, site-specific sound works, and documentation combine to create a multisensory landscape of works in which seeing and hearing intertwine.
Water as an artistic experimentation field
AFLOAT understands water as a topographical network and as a space for encounters, research, and aesthetic experiences. The participating artists explore currents, transmissions, and resonances with radio-based methods, field recordings, electronic sound generation, and installational setups. This creates an art form that intertwines natural observation, media art, and cultural education.
Sound Art as work exploration
The exhibition atmosphere thrives on the tension between industrial architecture and ephemeral sound. The former diesel power plant serves as a striking resonance body for an artistic engagement, where acoustic traces, technical apparatuses, and documentary materials open up new contexts. Visitors experience water as audible movement and as a starting point for a contemporary installation.
Artistic research and local currents
Radio Industry / Transmitter connects artistic research with regional landscape exploration in the AFLOAT project. The sound workshop in the Gramzow storage facility used an industrial monument as a sound lab and experimental radio laboratory. In Cottbus, these processes will be transferred into a museum context and supplemented by works that reflect local waters, electromagnetic waves, and social forms of exchange.
An art experience for curious ears
The exhibition invites visitors to shift familiar perceptions: sounds become traces, spaces become sound bodies, and water becomes a medium of transmission. The aesthetic experience arises not only before individual works but in the interplay of spatial effect, materiality, light, technical apparatus, and acoustic attention.
A visit to Afloat / Sound of Waves offers a concentrated insight into an experimental art direction between media art, sound art, and site-specific installation. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary art as open research and rethink the relationship between landscape, technology, and perception will find an impressive art experience at the Diesel Power Plant Cottbus.
