Faces of an Era: Photographic Journey in the Lusatia
The Sorbian Museum Cottbus presents Denis Galloway – Woblica ze zajźonego casa / Faces of an Era an intense photographic time travel into Lower Lusatia and the Spreewald. For the first time, a selection of around 200 glass negatives by the Scottish ethnographer, photographer, and artist Denis Galloway is at the center of the exhibition.
An Archive of Glass and Light
The images taken between 1908 and 1914 preserve faces, costumes, working worlds, and rituals of a Sorbian-Wendish way of life. Galloway's historical photography combines ethnographic precision with a remarkably attentive consideration of his work: people appear not merely as objects of study, but as bearers of individual stories and cultural memory.
Everyday Life, Costume, and Lived Identity
The photographs lead to scenes in the fields, at markets, and in private living spaces. Portraits of children and women, images from weddings, and various costume variants make visible how closely clothing, work, customs, and regional identity were intertwined. The rare authenticity of the costumes adds significant cultural-historical value to the exhibition.
Photography Between Art and Ethnography
As a photographic archive, the exhibition opens a nuanced approach to the history of the Sorbs and Wends. The glass negatives create a unique materiality: light, contour, and facial expressions emerge with concentrated clarity. This results in a quiet artistic experience that connects historical documentation, photographic art, and cultural education.
An Aesthetic Experience with Historical Awareness
The exhibition atmosphere thrives on slow contemplation. Each image invites viewers to read the visual space carefully: the expression of a face, the posture of a figure, the structure of a garment, or the relationship between human and landscape. Thus, engagement with the work becomes an aesthetic experience and a meeting with a cultural epoch whose traces reach into the present.
Conclusion: History Becomes Present in the Image
The exhibition offers art enthusiasts, photography lovers, and culturally curious visitors a focused view of Sorbian-Wendish life in the early 20th century. Anyone who wants to experience the connection between historical photography, ethnographic research, and regional memory should not miss this special artistic experience at the Sorbian Museum Cottbus.
