Faces of a Time: Photographic Memories of the Wends in Spreewald
The Wendish Museum Cottbus presents for the first time a selection from around 200 glass negatives by the Scottish ethnographer, photographer, and artist Denis Galloway. The exhibition leads into Lower Lusatia, the Spreewald, and Wittichenau, providing an intense access to the Sorbian-Wendish life world between 1908 and 1914.
An Archive of Glass and Light
Galloway's historical photographs preserve faces, costumes, working worlds, and rituals with extraordinary precision. Field work, market scenes, portraits of children and women, as well as weddings, make visible a society whose cultural identity is rooted in language, clothing, customs, and communal life.
Photography as Cultural Memory
The glass negatives connect ethnographic documentation with a concentrated aesthetic experience. In fine black-and-white contrasts, people do not appear as anonymous study objects, but as carriers of individual stories. Each observation of a work opens a quiet dialogue between historical source, photographic imagery, and regional memory culture.
Costumes, Everyday Life, and Lived Identity
Particularly impressive are the diverse costume variants that are rarely preserved in such authenticity. The photographs show clothing not just as a folkloric motif but as an expression of social belonging, local tradition, and cultural self-assertion. Thus, the exhibition connects the history of painting and photography with questions of cultural education and historical perception.
An Exhibition Between Ethnography and Aesthetic Experience
The original glass negatives arrived at the Ethnographic Museum in Cluj-Napoca in 1950, were later digitized, and made accessible through Europeana as part of European cultural heritage. At the Wendish Museum, these historical images now enter into direct dialogue with the culture and history of the Sorbs and Wends.
The exhibition atmosphere remains decelerated and focused. Light, materiality, and the silent presence of the photographed people create an art experience that connects historical research, visual perception, and personal memory.
