Faces of a Time: Photographic Memories from Lusatia
The Sorbian Museum Cottbus presents for the first time a selection of around 200 glass negatives by the Scottish ethnographer, photographer, and artist Denis Galloway. The exhibition leads into the Sorbian-Moravian world of life in Lower Lusatia and the Spreewald between 1908 and 1914 and connects historical photography with cultural history and aesthetic experience.
An Archive of Glass and Light
Galloway's captures preserve faces, costumes, working environments, and rituals of a bygone era. People engaged in fieldwork, at markets, in children’s and women’s portraits, and at weddings appear as individual personalities and bearers of cultural memory. The fine black-and-white contrasts of the photographic language open a focused space for the examination of the works.
Costumes, Daily Life, and Cultural Identity
Particularly impressive are the diverse costume variations that are rarely seen today in such authenticity. Clothing, posture, facial expressions, and social relationships become independent image carriers. Galloway's ethnographic photography not only documents a region but also makes cultural identity in fabrics, gestures, and faces immediately tangible.
Between Photography, Ethnography, and Art History
Denis Galloway, born in 1878, traveled through various European regions after his military career and artistic training. Between 1908 and 1914, he photographed Lusatia, Lower Lusatia, and Wittichenau. The original glass negatives arrived at the Ethnographic Museum in Cluj-Napoca in 1950 and were later digitized and made accessible via Europeana. The Sorbian Museum is now showing a selection of the Lower Lusatian captures in printed form for the first time.
Cultural Education Through Close Observation
The exhibition invites visitors to read historical photography not just as a document but as a sensual and art-historical image form. Light, contour, materiality, and composition direct the gaze toward individual life stories as well as regional traditions. This artistic experience opens an illustrative access to the history of the Sorbs and Wends and strengthens cultural education through immediate examination of the works.
Visitors can expect a quiet, intense exhibition atmosphere between photographic archive, ethnographic research, and regional memory. Those who attentively encounter the people in Galloway's images uncover a historical narrative that lives on in every gaze, each costume, and every scene of daily life. A visit to the Sorbian Museum enriches the aesthetic experience and makes Sorbian-Moravian cultural history immediately visible.
