Faces of a Time: A photographic journey in Lusatia

The Sorbian Museum Cottbus presents for the first time a selection of around 200 glass negatives by Scottish ethnographer, photographer, and artist Denis Galloway. His photographs taken between 1908 and 1914 lead to Lower Lusatia, Wittichenau, and the Spreewald. They preserve faces, costumes, working worlds, and rituals of a Sorbian-Wendish way of life.

An archive of glass and light

The historical photographs open a quiet, penetrating time window. Fieldwork, market activities, portraits of women and children, and weddings appear as precisely observed scenes of everyday life. Especially the diverse variants of costumes give the exhibition a cultural-historical depth that goes far beyond the individual image.

Photography between ethnography and aesthetic experience

Galloway's work combines documentary accuracy with a remarkably attentive visual language. Postures, gazes, fabrics, and spatial situations condense into a contemplation of regional identity, social relationships, and memory. The black-and-white photographs seem both factual and immediate: they make history tangible through concrete people.

From glass plates to European cultural heritage

The original glass negatives arrived at the Ethnographic Museum in Cluj-Napoca in 1950. Later, they were digitized and made accessible via Europeana as part of the European cultural heritage. In Cottbus, the Lower Lusatian images can now be seen for the first time in printed form. This presentation connects museum research, photographic legacy, and cultural education.

The Sorbian Museum as a place of cultural education

The exhibition is in dialogue with the permanent exhibition of the Sorbian Museum, which conveys the language, religion, literature, customs, costumes, art, and music of the Sorbs and Wends in Lower Lusatia. The curation invites visitors to consider photography as a historical archive and as an independent aesthetic form of expression.

Conclusion: An art experience full of historical closeness

Denis Galloway – Woblica from the distant house / Faces of a Time awaits visitors with rare pictorial evidence, impressive portraits, and a concentrated exhibition atmosphere. Anyone who wants to connect photography, cultural history, and regional identity in an intensive aesthetic experience should definitely experience this exhibition live at the Sorbian Museum Cottbus.
