Faces of a Time: Photographic Memories of Lusatia

The Wendish Museum Cottbus presents with Denis Galloway – Woblica from a Past House / Faces of a Time an immersive photographic journey into the Sorbian-Wendish way of life in Lower Lusatia. At the center is for the first time a selection from around 200 glass negatives by Scottish photographer and ethnographer Denis Galloway.

An Archive of Glass and Light

The images, taken between 1908 and 1914, preserve faces, traditional costumes, working worlds, and rituals of a bygone era. Galloway's historical photography combines ethnographic precision with attentive artwork consideration: people appear not as anonymous study objects, but as carriers of individual stories, social relationships, and cultural memory.

Faces, Costumes, and Everyday Life

Portraits of women, children, and families are accompanied by scenes of fieldwork, market life, and festive occasions such as weddings. The imagery opens a focused view on clothing, body posture, facial expressions, and social roles. In the quiet exhibition atmosphere, each glass negative unfolds a special spatial effect between documentary accuracy and aesthetic experience.

Photography as Cultural Memory

The exhibition consciously does not link painting, sculpture, and installation, but rather emphasizes the photographic image as a historical testimony. This creates a precise art experience that raises questions about identity, language, homeland, and the transformation of rural living environments. The Wendish Museum relates Galloway's work to the cultural history of the Sorbs and Wends in Lower Lusatia and makes cultural education immediately tangible.

A Museum as a Place of Encounter

The Wendish Museum Cottbus is dedicated to the history and presence of the Sorbs and Wends. Its permanent exhibition addresses topics including language, literature, customs, traditional costumes, art, music, and the loss of homeland and identity due to lignite mining. The exhibition on Denis Galloway expands this context with a photographic window into the early years of the 20th century.

Conclusion: An Exhibition that Makes Memory Visible

Denis Galloway – Woblica from a Past House / Faces of a Time connects historical photography, ethnography, and regional cultural history into a quiet, touching art experience. Visitors experience an artwork review that sharpens the view for faces, materials, clothing, and social spaces. Those wanting to discover Lusatia and its Sorbian-Wendish ways of life with a new appreciation should definitely experience this exhibition in person.
