Faces of a Time: A Photographic Journey in Lusatia
The Wendish Museum Cottbus presents for the first time a selection of about 200 glass negatives by the Scottish ethnographer, photographer, and artist Denis Galloway with Woblica from a Forgotten House / Faces of a Time. The exhibition takes you to Lower Lusatia, the Spreewald, and Wittichenau and opens an impressive access to the Sorbian-Wendish world of life between 1908 and 1914.
An Archive of Glass and Light
Galloway's historical photographs preserve faces, costumes, work worlds, and rituals with exceptional precision. The glass negatives give the images a special material presence: fine gray values, clear contours, and the quiet tension of the photographic moment condense into a visual memory of the region.
Everyday Life, Work, and Lived Identity
The examination of the works leads to people engaged in field work, at markets, and during significant life events such as weddings. Portraits of children and women provide insight into society at that time, as do the various costume variants that today are rarely seen in comparable authenticity. Clothing, gestures, and glances become carriers of individual stories and cultural belonging.
Photography Between Ethnography and Art
Denis Galloway's work moves between ethnographic documentation, visual cultural history, and independent photography art. His images function as historical sources while also possessing a concentrated aesthetic effect. Postures, fabrics, faces, and spatial situations combine into compositions that demand careful, decelerated contemplation of the works.
A European Cultural Heritage in the Museum
The original glass negatives were handed over to the Ethnographic Museum in Cluj-Napoca in 1950, later digitized, and made accessible via Europeana as part of the European cultural heritage. The Wendish Museum now shows the Lower Lusatian images for the first time in printed form. This creates a dialogue between the archive, the present, and the regional culture of memory.
Cultural Education and Regional Memory
The curation places Galloway's photographs within the history of the Sorbs and Wends in Lower Lusatia. The museum becomes a place of cultural education where questions of language, customs, identity, and the transformation of rural ways of life become immediately experienceable. The exhibition atmosphere combines historical information with an intense aesthetic experience.
Conclusion: Faces that Preserve History
Visitors can expect a quiet, compelling artistic experience between photography, ethnography, and culture of memory. Those who want to experience the Lusatia of the early 20th century not only through historical texts but in faces, gestures, costumes, and work worlds should definitely visit this exhibition at the Wendish Museum Cottbus in person.
